I enjoy writing songs

Over the years I have slowly been composing a few songs. On average, I seem to be “producing” one song per year. Though the display of my “talents” is only mediocre, songwriting is truly an enjoyable process to go through, albeit unnerving at times.

Occasionally, I get melancholic and curious about the creations of my younger self and dive into the archives. From there, every couple of months I get enough courage and upload some to my Soundcloud page.

Today I am taking a leap by sharing three of them with you and what’s worse: their lyrics ;). Hopefully, you’ll be able to enjoy some of them. If you’re not tired after these three songs, go to my Soundcloud and listen to some more songs that include electrical guitars and drums.

The recordings contain myself on guitar and singing respectively in 2010, 2007, and 2009. Thank you for listening!

Studentenlied (2010, abbreviated version)

This Dutch-language song was written in the framework of a song contest organized by Studentenconvent Gent. The challenge was to compose a typical song by and for students. Our song came out as the winner for 2010. The lyrics were written by two friends and myself, however the music, recording etc. were done by me alone. It’s about drinking and girls, non-biographical – honestly.

Lyrics (full version)

Want pintje hier, pintje daar
Overal stond zijn pintje klaar
Kegel, dronken, scheef, kanaar
Eender hoe je ‘t noemt
‘t was gist’ren waar

Nu was ‘t toch wel zo’n goei’ drie weken
Dat-ie niet had uitgekeken
Negeerde de les, ‘t lab of ‘t college
Het heeft geen nut
Leve ‘t vrije leven!

Maar toen stond hij daar in de juni-maand
Zijn hoofd was leeg, wat was hij beschaamd
De wijsheid, die komt met de jaren
Hij zal volgend jaar dat klusje wel klaren.

Want pintje hier, pintje daar
overal staat zijn pintje klaar
Kegel, dronken, scheef, kanaar
Eender hoe je ‘t heet
‘t is altijd waar

waar

Triangles Lullaby (2007)

Some adolescent/teenage angst at the time. Dark lyrics but fear not, I am doing well, haha :). I tend to write lyrics randomly, the only requirement being they need to fit the music. Disappointingly perhaps, but there is not per se a deeper meaning to them. This one is from 2007.

Lyrics

It’s been a while, but I can fly higher than before
I love myself, more than anything in the world

Wish I could hold myself
And I can get much more

It’s been a while
but I can get you higher than before
I love myself
more than anything in the world

Wish I could hold myself
And I can get much more
For I don’t give a damn and
I don’t want to change

into her ex-boyfriend
I can’t quite figure why he killed her
I’m not dark I’m plain pitch

Watch me degenerate, I do it for a living
Not feeling’s like a dream to me now.

So go and fight yourself
’cause I ain’t never intended on hating myself like you,

on hating myself like you,
on hating myself like you,
on hating myself like you.

Thump me up in the
corner of 6 degrees
With 87 options

Please steal what’s mine
’cause in the end it’s always been yours
and not mine (tonight, tonight.)

Go and fight yourself

’cause I ain’t never intended

on hating myself like you,

on hating myself like you,

on hating myself like you,

on hating myself like you.

Anyone Who Stood In Our Way (2009)

About girls, obviously – the key inspiration for everything done (and undone) in life. Turn up the volume a tad. From 2009.

Lyrics

Waking up on a blue monday’s morning
Can’t say I’ve never been stupid before
but I’ve never been so unfaithful,
not today nor the rest of your life and I…

No I don’t think the time was right to speak,
though I don’t think it’s up to
anyone who stood in our way,
but I don’t think you’re bothered.

You try to fit in everyone else’s shoes,
You please the new kids ’cause they are your future.
Oh such a shame for us to lie,
doesn’t change the fact – a disgrace to talk.

And I don’t know how to make these things add up
though I don’t think that bothers
to anyone who was in our days
no-one likes you anyways
